Pets need water just like humans. Everyone knows this. And they can become dehydrated just like humans. So, pet owners need to make sure their pets are getting enough clean, fresh water to keep them healthy. Here are a few things to know about your dog and water.
How Much is Enough?
How much water your pet needs depends on the animal’s weight, how active he is, and what kinds of foods he eats. The good news with dogs is that they pretty much take care of their water needs themselves as long as enough fresh water is available. During warmer months, of course, your pet will be drinking more, so you need to make sure he has enough.
What if Your Pet is Not Getting Enough Water?
He will become dehydrated. You will know this because he will have sunken eyes, he will be more lethargic, he will lose his appetite, and he will experience dry mouth and depression.
Any time your pet’s water intake changes suddenly, you need to pay attention. If he suddenly begins drinking a lot more water or stops drinking it altogether, it could be a sign of something more serious and you should see a vet.
What if You Think He is Dehydrated?
There are ways to check if the animal is dehydrated, in addition to observing the symptoms described above. One way is a skin test. Grab a fold of skin at the back of animal’s neck between the shoulder blades. Then let it go. If it moves back into place quickly, your animal is likely in good shape. If, however, it takes a while for it to return to its usual shape, the dog may be dehydrated.
Another way to check for dehydration is have a vet take a look at the animal. And you can also monitor his daily water intake to see if it has changed.
Making Sure Your Pet Gets Enough Water
If your pet doesn’t seem that interested in drinking water, there a few things you can do. One is to change the bowl. It could be that he doesn’t like it. Some pets prefer ceramic to metal and vice versa.
You can also try using a pet fountain. This device keeps a constant flow of water running, which is a little fresher and cooler.
You can also try putting the water dish in another location.
It’s also always a good idea to have water available for your dog after he exercises.
And speaking of exercise, dogs love to run around with other dogs and if you need to go out of town for the day or overnight for several days, consider bringing your pet to Barney’s Ranch, where he’ll be able to run around in our 4,000-square-foot outdoor dog run.
