It’s fun to name your pet. People usually give the naming process a lot of thought. It is important to pet owners. The name you give your pet says a lot about you as well, what your personality is like, and how you look at your dog in relation to you.

And everybody wants their dog’s name to be special to show the affection they have for their dogs. You don’t want to be the one at the park calling out, “Here, Rover,” or “Here, Spot.”

What are the most popular names for dogs these days? Glad you asked.

According to one list compiled by a pet insurance company, the most popular name for male dogs is Bailey, followed in order by Max, Charlie and Buddy. Continuing down the list, again, in order of popularity, we have Rocky, Jake, Jack, Toby, Cody, Buster, Duke, Cooper, Riley, Harley, Bear, Tucker, Murphy, Lucky, Oliver, and Sam, rounding out the top 20.

For female dogs, Bella tops the list. Bella is followed by Lucy, Molly and Daisy. Numbers five through 20, in order of popularity, are Maggie, Sophie, Sadie, Chloe, Bailey, Lola, Zoe, Abby, Ginger, Roxy, Gracie, Coco, Sasha, Lily, Angel, and Princess.

Are you having trouble finding a name for your dog? There really are so many to choose from. If you are looking for something a little different, you might want to go with a superhero motif.

How about Thor, Loki, Astro, Warlock, Specter, Gambit, Doom, or Vertigo?

Here are some names inspired by babies of celebrities: Banjo, Gunner, Kai, Jet, Jaxx, Draco, Denim, Ace, Axl, and Phoenix.

Another good source for names is beer monikers: Guinness, Doppelbock, Rasputin, Blondie, and Abner. Or, if you are into sports, how about using the name of an athlete for your pet: Ali, MJ, Peyton, Griffey, Dirk, Deion, Elway, or Tiger.

Some people really get imaginative when naming their dogs. According to Rover.com, here are some of the most unusual dog names: Won Ton, Reeses Puppycups, Sitka, Lupin, Willie Nelson, Artoo Dogtoo, Hashtag, Espresso, Muttley Crue, Yeti, and Wifi.

Some Harry Potter fans used names from characters in the novels: Minerva, Sirius, Malfoy, Gryffindor, Bellatrix, Cedric, Cornelius Fudge, and Tonks.

Others drew their inspiration from more culinary offerings: Queso, Raisin, Macaroni, Latka, Tater Tot, Vienna Sausage, and Nacho. Makes you hungry just hearing the names.

And finally, others drew from the sci-fi genre to name their pet: Tyrion, Blade, Chewbacca, Riddick, Princess Leia, Kal-El and Krypto.
